Why WordPress sites get slow

Most slow WordPress sites are not slow because of WordPress. They are slow because of what has been added over the years: heavy page builders, large themes that load everything on every page, dozens of plugins, uncompressed images, third-party scripts for chat widgets and tracking, and hosting that cannot keep up.

Speed matters for more than patience. Google uses page experience, including the Core Web Vitals measures of loading, responsiveness and visual stability, as part of how it ranks pages, and every extra second of loading costs enquiries and sales.

How I speed a site up

I start by measuring: PageSpeed and Core Web Vitals on key pages, on mobile and desktop, plus a look at what each page actually loads. That shows where the time is going, whether it is images, scripts, the theme, a particular plugin or the server itself.

Then I fix the causes in order of impact: resizing and converting images to modern formats, removing or replacing heavy plugins, loading scripts only where they are needed, self-hosting fonts, setting up caching properly and, where it is the bottleneck, moving to better hosting. Sometimes the right answer is rebuilding a few templates in a leaner way. You get a before-and-after report so you can see what changed.

Keeping it fast

Sites slow down again as content, plugins and scripts are added. A rolling care plan keeps an eye on speed alongside updates and backups, and fast managed hosting removes one of the most common bottlenecks.

How much faster will my site be?

It depends on what is slowing it down. I measure before starting and after finishing so you can see the difference; the audit tells you what is realistic before you commit.

Is it just a caching plugin?

Rarely. Caching helps, but it cannot fix heavy themes, oversized images or too many scripts. Those are dealt with at the source.

Will my site look different?

No. Speed work is behind the scenes. Your design and content stay the same unless we agree to change something.

Do I need new hosting?

Sometimes. If the server is the bottleneck I will tell you and can move the site for you, but many sites get much faster on their current hosting.

How much does speed optimisation cost?

You get a fixed price after the audit, based on what needs doing. There is no hourly meter running.

Do you work with businesses outside Nottinghamshire?
