Web design Derby
Websites and local SEO for Derby businesses, from Cathedral Quarter independents to engineering suppliers and trades. Built by one Mansfield-based WordPress developer, fast to load and set up to be found by people searching in Derby.

Derby sits on the River Derwent, and its economy has long leaned on making things. Rolls-Royce and Toyota are among its biggest employers, and the railway industry is still part of the picture too. That matters for a web designer, because a city like this is full of firms that supply, service and support those bigger names: machining shops, contractors, recruiters, training providers and specialist trades. Most of them get work through reputation and search, not shopfront footfall.
Derby also has a lively independent side. The Cathedral Quarter is known for its boutiques, cafes and restaurants, and the historic Silk Mill, part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, now houses the Museum of Making. Those businesses live or die by how they look online before anyone walks in.
I’m Simon, a WordPress developer based in Mansfield. I work with Derby businesses remotely, by phone, WhatsApp, email and video call, and build sites that are quick, clear and easy to update.
What Derby businesses get
- A local developer you can phone, WhatsApp or video call directly — not an agency inbox
- Location-aware on-page SEO targeting Derby search terms
- Google Business Profile set up and tied into the site properly
- Bespoke WordPress builds — no recycled templates
- Direct WhatsApp support once you're live
Two very different kinds of Derby customer
A Derby business usually falls into one of two camps, and the website should be built for whichever one you are.
- Business-to-business firms (fabrication, engineering services, facilities, training) need a site that reads like a credible supplier: clear capabilities, certifications and a simple way to send a specification or request a quote.
- Customer-facing businesses (cafes, salons, shops, tradespeople) need a site that answers the questions people have in the moment: what do you do, where are you, how do I book, what does it cost.
Both need speed. My sites average under 0.8 seconds to load, which matters when a buyer is comparing three suppliers in three browser tabs and closes the slowest one. Every site is written as clean WordPress code by me, with nothing outsourced, so there is no pile of unused plugins slowing it down. You can see the sort of build I offer on the web design page.
How people in Derby actually search
Most local searches are short and blunt. People type what they need plus the place name, then pick from the map results at the top of Google. Realistic examples for Derby:
- “boiler repair Derby”
- “accountant near Pride Park”
- “brunch Cathedral Quarter”
- “CNC machining Derby”
To show up, you need two things working together. The first is a Google Business Profile, which is the free listing that appears on Google Maps and in local results. Set it up properly with the right categories, photos and a steady flow of genuine reviews. The second is a website with a page for each service and a clear mention of Derby and the surrounding areas you cover, so Google understands what you do and where.
That combination is what local SEO means: search engine optimisation aimed at people near you. I can’t promise a particular ranking, and nobody honest can, but I can make sure the groundwork is done well.
What a strong Derby business site includes
It depends on the trade, but these are the pieces I’d expect to build in for most Derby firms:
- A short, plain summary on the home page of who you serve and what you do, so a stranger understands within a few seconds.
- Individual service pages, each written for the way customers describe the problem, not your internal jargon.
- Proof: case studies, logos of accreditations, and your best Google reviews shown on the page.
- A quote or enquiry form that is short, works well on a phone, and sends the details straight to your inbox.
- Sensible structure behind the scenes, including something called schema, which is a little extra information that tells Google your opening details, services and reviews.
If you sell products online, I build shops on WooCommerce. If you would rather spread the cost, there are pay-monthly websites from £65 a month.
Working with Derby alongside its neighbours
Derby businesses rarely serve Derby alone. A contractor might take jobs in Ilkeston, a supplier might sell into Nottingham, and a trade or service firm might cover Alfreton and beyond. I build service-area pages to reflect that honestly, so your site can speak to each place you work in without repeating the same text. If that sounds like you, take a look at my pages for Ilkeston, Alfreton and Nottingham, or the full list of areas I work with.
Working with me is simple. I’m one developer, with 15+ years of WordPress experience, and I’m available every day from 09:00 to 21:00, with most enquiries answered the same day. Quotes are fixed and scoped up front, so you know the cost before anything starts. Tell me about your business through the contact page or send a WhatsApp message on 07572 422758.
