Hucknall sits on the west bank of the Leen Valley in Ashfield, with the Whyburn Brook running through the middle. At its centre is the Church of St Mary Magdalene, close to the market square, which holds Lord Byron’s burial place and is known for its stained glass by Charles Eamer Kempe.

Coal mining shaped the town from 1861 until 1986, when the last of its two collieries closed. Hucknall was also an aviation place: the airfield, established in 1916, became RAF Hucknall, and Rolls-Royce carried out flight testing there from 1927.
