Sutton-in-Ashfield grew around two industries: coal mining and hosiery. Sutton Colliery, at Stanton Hill, closed in 1989, and the hosiery maker Pretty Polly kept trading in the town until 2005. Now the centre has the Idlewells Shopping Centre with its indoor market, the renovated Portland Square and the Cornerstone Theatre, while Kings Mill Reservoir, known for sailing, and the Sherwood Observatory give the edges a different feel.
