Why moving to Oxygen 6 is a rebuild, not an update

Oxygen 6 is built on a different engine from Oxygen Classic (the 4.x versions most existing sites run). The two store designs in different ways, so there is no button that converts a classic site into an Oxygen 6 one. Your pages, posts and media stay in WordPress, but the templates, headers, footers and reusable parts that make up the design have to be rebuilt in the new builder.

Done carefully, that is an opportunity rather than a chore. Most classic sites have picked up years of one-off styles, duplicated blocks and plugins added to patch gaps. A migration is the moment to rebuild the design as a tidy system of global styles and reusable components, so the new site is faster and easier to edit than the old one ever was.

My own site, simonsayswebdesign.com, runs on Oxygen 6, so the process on this page is the one I use myself.

What stays the same, and what gets better

The aim is that your visitors notice a faster site, not a different business. Your content, page addresses, SEO titles and descriptions, forms and integrations all carry across. Where an address has to change, a permanent redirect goes in so you keep the rankings and links you have earned.

Behind the scenes you get a cleaner build: a proper design system of colours, fonts and spacing, reusable sections your team can drop onto new pages safely, fewer plugins, and pages that load in well under a second. I test every template on phones, tablets and desktops before anything goes live.

Should you migrate now?

Oxygen Classic still works, and not every site needs moving straight away. If your site is stable, fast and rarely changes, it can sensibly wait. If it is slow, awkward to edit, relies on add-ons that are no longer maintained, or you are planning a redesign anyway, migrating now saves paying for the same work twice.

I will give you a straight answer after looking at the site. If the honest advice is to leave it alone for now, that is what you will hear.

Common questions

Can Oxygen Classic sites be upgraded to Oxygen 6 automatically?

No. Oxygen 6 stores designs differently from Oxygen Classic, so templates and layouts are rebuilt in the new builder. Your WordPress content, posts and media carry across as they are.

Will I lose my Google rankings?

Not if the migration is handled properly. Page addresses, titles and descriptions are kept, and any address that changes gets a permanent redirect. I check everything again after launch.

How long does an Oxygen 6 migration take?

It depends on the number of templates and custom features. A typical brochure site takes two to four weeks from sign-off. You get a timeline with the fixed price before anything starts.

Does my site go offline during the migration?

No. The rebuild happens on a private copy, and your current site stays live until the new one is approved and switched over.

Do you work with clients outside Nottinghamshire?

Yes. Everything is done remotely, so I work with businesses and agencies across the UK and abroad, by email, WhatsApp, phone or video call.

What does an Oxygen 6 migration cost?
