From coal town to a busy mix of local trades and firms

Alfreton sits in the Amber Valley district of Derbyshire, not far from the Nottinghamshire border. For a long time coal was the story here: in the 18th century it was the chief coal mining centre in Derbyshire, and the pits closed in the late 1960s. Since then the local economy has shifted towards light industry and services, and the safety footwear maker Rock Fall is one of the firms based in the town.

That history shows up on the high street and on the industrial estates: a lot of independent trades, small manufacturers, shops and service businesses that rely on word of mouth and on being found when a neighbour searches. The town has heritage to point to as well, including St Martin’s Church, parts of which date from around 1200, and Alfreton Hall, the country house whose 1855 wing is now an arts and education centre.

I’m Simon, a WordPress developer based in Mansfield, and I help Alfreton businesses get a website that does the job properly, working entirely remotely.

What Alfreton businesses get

  • A local developer you can phone, WhatsApp or video call directly — not an agency inbox
  • Location-aware on-page SEO targeting Alfreton search terms
  • Google Business Profile set up and tied into the site properly
  • Bespoke WordPress builds — no recycled templates
  • Direct WhatsApp support once you're live

Why a small Alfreton business can't rely on the shopfront alone

Alfreton is well connected. The A38 and A61 run through the area, with the M1 close by, and the railway station reopened in 1973. That means customers and clients often arrive from beyond the town itself, and many will look you up on their phone before deciding.

A dated or slow site sends them elsewhere. A clear one wins the job. Think about who is searching:

  • a homeowner comparing three plumbers or builders;
  • a nearby firm looking for a reliable print, packaging or engineering supplier;
  • someone new to the area looking for a hairdresser, café or dentist.

All of them check the same few things: what you do, whether you cover their address, whether other people rate you, and how to get in touch. Getting those answers on screen quickly is most of the job, and my sites average under 0.8 seconds to load. Details of what I build are on the web design page.

Getting found when people search "Alfreton"

Local searches usually combine a service and a place. For Alfreton, that might be:

  • “electrician Alfreton”
  • “plumber near Alfreton”
  • “car repairs Alfreton”
  • “dog groomer Alfreton”

Google answers these with a map and three highlighted businesses, followed by ordinary results. The map listing comes from your Google Business Profile, a free profile showing your name, services, area, photos and reviews. Filling it in fully and asking happy customers for reviews is often the quickest local win.

Your website backs it up. Give each service its own page, say plainly that you work in Alfreton and the towns around it, and include the details Google expects, such as your business name and contact information written consistently everywhere. That is the heart of local SEO. Nobody can honestly guarantee a position on Google, but a well-built foundation gives you a fair chance.

What I'd build for an Alfreton trade or shop

Most businesses here don’t need a huge site. They need a focused one that turns visitors into calls and messages. In practice that means:

  • a home page that says what you do and where within the first few lines;
  • a page per service, written in the words your customers use;
  • photos of real work, plus reviews pulled from Google;
  • tap-to-call and WhatsApp buttons that work properly on a phone;
  • a short enquiry form that lands directly in your inbox.

Behind the scenes it’s hand-built WordPress with clean code, so it stays quick and is easy for you to edit. I can also look after hosting and ongoing maintenance, so updates and security aren’t something you have to think about. Prices are fixed and agreed before I start.

Serving Alfreton alongside the towns around it

Alfreton doesn’t sit in isolation. Plenty of firms in the town also take work in the nearby Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire towns, and I build sites that reflect that. If you work across the area, you can see how I approach the neighbouring towns on my pages for Mansfield, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Chesterfield and Derby, or the whole list of areas.

I’m a single developer with 15+ years of WordPress experience, and I’m available every day from 09:00 to 21:00. Most enquiries get a reply the same day, by WhatsApp, email, phone (07572 422758) or video call. If you’d like a fixed quote for your Alfreton business, use the contact page and tell me a little about what you do.

Alfreton questions

Can you work with a Alfreton business remotely?
Yes. Projects are run by phone, WhatsApp, email and video call, so it works just as well whether you're around the corner or across the county — and there's no travel to pay for.
Can you help my site rank in Alfreton specifically?
That's what the location work covers: on-page optimisation, a proper Google Business Profile and landing pages aimed at the terms local customers search.
Do you work with Alfreton agencies?
Yes — white-label WordPress development for agencies is a regular part of the work.
What does a Alfreton project cost?
Everything is scoped and fixed-priced before work starts. Send a short brief and you'll get a number back the same day in most cases.
Can a small Alfreton business really compete with bigger firms online?
Often, yes, for local searches. People searching for a service in Alfreton want someone nearby they can trust. A clear website, a complete Google Business Profile and genuine reviews go a long way. I can't guarantee rankings, but local competition is usually beatable with good groundwork.
I already have a Facebook page. Do I still need a website?
A Facebook page is a good start, but a website is something you own and control, and it appears in Google searches in a way social pages often don't. It also lets you explain services properly, show reviews and take enquiries in one place, without relying on someone scrolling.
Do you work with Alfreton businesses if you're based in Mansfield?
Yes. I'm based in Mansfield and work with businesses across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, including Alfreton. Everything is handled remotely by WhatsApp, email, phone and video call, so you'll get the same service wherever you are.
Can I pay for my website monthly?
Yes. Pay-monthly websites start from £65 a month, which spreads the cost. If you prefer to pay once, web design starts from £850 and WordPress development from £1,200. Either way, you get a fixed quote scoped up front before any work begins.
