There are two types of keywords – those that can produce sufficient traffic for you and those that won’t. If you do not do your research correctly, you could be optimising either for a term that hasn’t got any traffic or is just that competitive that you never will get high enough to get traffic from it. And I know from bitter experience that this can leave you top of the search terms, but with no visitors. So it is vital to get it right.

How much traffic do you need?
Of course, for some websites selling high end niche products with high conversion rates, just a dozen or two extra visitors per month could bring in a lot of extra income. But for a blog earning from AdSense with a CPM of around $0.50, even 10,000 extra visitors per month is hardly going to increase revenue.

So it is up to you, as you are the one that knows your web site, to decide how many extra visitors you think you need per month. We come back to this in a minute!

Finding keyword suggestions
This is where the process starts. First of all, you should get a list of possible keywords with traffic. This is very easy to do. Just go to the google Keyword selector tool and type in a few single keywords that are relevant to your traffic needs. At this point, keep them broad and look through the results that are returned.

Now against each suggestion there is the count of average monthly visitors through google. A word of warning here – make sure that you have the correct geographical area selected. If your website can make money from global traffic, then research global keywords.

Export the list to Excel to make the rest of the process easier. A quick glance down the list, made easier by sorting it first on the average monthly traffic, will show you which keywords are above your requirement and which below. Those a lot below can be deleted.

Check the competition
Now paste the list of keywords into a suitable tool. I use seobook.com’s Rank Checker tool for this. Use this tool to find out how you are currently performing on each of the keywords. Hopefully, unless you are a brand new site then for at least some of the tools you will already be rated somewhere in the top 20 pages of google. This is where you can start your work.

Nearly all reputable themes are compatible with mobile devices, so when a theme lacks responsiveness, this is a cause for concern. Many theme sellers allow you to filter out unresponsive themes. An additional option is to browse over a curated, responsive theme list. One of the effective ways to know if a responsive theme is good enough is to try to run the demo via google‘s latest mobile-friendliness tool.

SEO

When wordpress is equipped with any of the several great SEO plugins, it could be among the most SEO-friendly CMS available. Yet, a lot of themes make all kinds of on-site SEO errors like omitting header and alt tags, duplicating content and making dynamic URL mistakes.

In choosing a theme, go for one that mentions “SEO ready” or “SEO optimized” in its description, but do not blindly trust it. Many developers add this so they could sell their theme. When you know that a designer has at least taken SEO into consideration when developing their theme, you get some sort of assurance.

You can install an extension like SEO Site Tools or Mozbar for the Chrome browser to do some fast SEO checks on the demo of a theme.

Easy to Customize

Several themes come standard with a customization dashboard. This way, you don’t have to do direct changes to style sheets.
